Playing in Dirt = Stress Relief

I’m definitely feeling accomplished for this vacation. I’ve got all my seedlings that were ready for transplant in pots and buckets. Working on getting the rest of my seedlings stronger for transplant. Hubs pulled out a bush that hadn’t started showing any signs of life pulled out of the front flower bed. It had huge thorns on it and I did not really like it. It was worse than a rose bush. We went to our local Master Gardeners Plant Sale and found a native plant to replace the dead one that was pulled up. When this plant starts blooming, the blooms look a lot like a bat, hence the common name Batface. LOL! But it will attract pollinators and that’s the goal. I also threw caution to the wind and threw some random flower seeds in my flower bed as well to see what else I can get growing for the pollinators. I need bees and butterflies around to help pollinate my veggies. I will eventually have garden beds set up to grow more but until then I will grow what I can in buckets. It is all about growing fresh food that I know where it came from and controlling what is going in my body.

Growing our own food is a basic part of life we have chosen as a society is best left to government subsided farms. God only knows what is in the fertilizers they use and we all know the government has been genetically modifying crops to produce more in order to put more actual farmers out of business. And who knows what those modified seeds have in them. And let us face it, the government does not have our best interests at heart.

I love gardening. And the older I get the more I realize that there is so little in life that can be controlled. But gardening is different. For the most part you are in control of the plant’s lifecycle. Now there can be things like bore worms and aphids that can and will destroy the plants. But there are things you can do to save the plants and get rid of the pests. It is not easy but it is doable. You do control the soil, watering, and sunlight getting to the plants. If it gets crazy hot in the sun, like Texas summers, you put up a shade cloth. If you have climbing plants, you need to put up a trellis. Tomato plants need cages as those growing tomatoes get heavy and weigh the plant down. There is way more you can control in gardening than not. And in a world where there is so little you can control, gardening can relieve stress. At least it does for me. It feels good to play in the dirt. It feels good to do all the work cultivating your plants and your reward is fresh food. We must go back to gardening and being way more self sufficient.

We must slow down and work with what God has given us.
