The day before Christ was crucified, a lot happened that had been predicted in scripture.
First there was dinner. While eating Jesus told His disciples that one of them would betray Him(Matt 26:21). Jesus washed the disciples’ feet(John 13:3-11). Jesus told Peter that he would deny Him(John 13:36-38). Jesus instituted The Lord’s Supper(Luke 22:19-20). There is the promise of the Holy Spirit(John 14:15-31).
Jesus then went to Gethsemane, also known as the Mount of Olives, to pray.(Mark 14:31-42).
Then, as it was written, Jesus was betrayed and arrested.(Matt 26:47-56)
Now I have been hearing and reading these scriptures since I was a child. I was brought up in church thanks to my paternal grandparents. But it was not until I was an adult, walking in the valley of shadows, that I realized just how human Jesus truly was and yet still God. Jesus knew he would be betrayed. Jesus know that His time had come to go back to the right hand of the Father. And yet, Jesus was in agony knowing what He had to endure in order to be the final blood sacrifice so that we can have a personal walk and life with God. Jesus’ sacrifice would be our only way to heaven. Jesus was emotionally distraught to the point that he was sweating drops of blood. Then Jesus asked the Father if the cup could be taken from Him. But Jesus followed that request with saying that the Father’s will be done. The fact that Jesus was having a human reaction made Jesus so personable to me. Jesus was in so much pain both physically and mentally just like us. Jesus was human. But as the Son of God, Jesus knew the Father’s will must be done. No matter what storms of life we have to endure, the Father’s will must be done. We will come out on the other side. It will change us. We will have bruises and scars. But we will come out spiritually stronger. God did not abandon Jesus. And God promises He will never abandon us.
